FEILDING, MANAWATU & HIGHLANDERS AARON SMITH IS A CUT ABOVE THE REST WITH PACE & PASSING ACCURACY IN THE ALL BLACKS 35 SQUAD, 2012

Feilding, Manawatu and Highlanders half-back and rugby football player, Aaron Smith is stoked to be named in the All Blacks 35 training squad for 2012.

“It was a surreal feeling. I’m still buzzing right now,” Smith said to the Otago Daily Times.

Buzz away. An opportunity of a sporting dream in motion for young talent coming through the ranks. Smith is like Sheffield Leigh meets Peter Williams comments about him:

“He’s the best passing halfback New Zealand’s produced since Graeme Bachop at the 1995 World Cup, and Bachop was the best since Chris Laidlaw more than a quarter of a century before that.” The trick to a pace, possession and position game like rugby football is known to be is ”so get the ball into an attacking backline half a second faster quicker and immediately a backline has an advantage over fast rushing defences.

Yet the kid needs to work of the length of pass. His accuracy is fast and spot on.

Williams continues: “The former apprentice hairdresser from Feilding might also be the first of his trade to play for the All Blacks since one of Laidlaw’s team mates Paul Little in 1963-64. You can’t help but say that when it comes to halfbacks this year Aaron Smith is a cut above the rest.”

There you have it.

Congratulations.

WHEN FISHING BOATS ARE COVETOUS WITH MISSILES – “CHINA MARINE SURVEILLANCE” NEWS & OTHER NEWS

Blogger and Horiwoodblog reader of China Daily Mail blog checks in to say hello today. What’s Craig up to?

Marine Surveillance Boats instead of navy floatilla are all the rage in China. DCM reports: “In a month-long standoff between China and the Philippines over a disputed shoal in the South China Sea, Beijinghas so far refrained from sending warships from its increasingly powerful and modern navy to enforce its territorial claims.

Instead, China has deployed patrol vessels from its expanding fleet of paramilitary ships to Scarborough Shoal, known in Chinese as Huangyan Island. Naval experts say the intent to utilize unarmed or lightly armed patrol boats from fisheries, marine surveillance and other civilian agencies rather than warships is to minimise the risk of conflict and contain any regional backlash.”–If this story interests you, read on here.

TAWERA KERR-BARLOW MAY TURN ON A RUGBY FOOTBALL SHOW, ALL BLACKS SQUAD 35, 2012

Tawera Kerr-Barlow, son of Reimana and Gail has some top level rugby football on his plate to contend with. He completely missed the ‘call up’ text on his phone though to join the All Blacks Training Squad of 2012. A rugby official had to break the news to him instead.

As the story goes, “I’d changed my phone Sim card to an Aussie one so I missed the text telling me to call [the coaching squad], Tawera said.

The story also goes the Waikato-born Chiefs half-back says: ’He was thrilled to share the moment with his father who had travelled south from his mining work in Darwin to watch the 21-year-old play over the weekend.

It’s good to see a new breed of youth in the spotlight in New Zealand. It gives the country a bit of oxygen, when older generations agree to share the spotlight more with youngsters like young Tawera.

FRENCH RICH MAY VISIT THE LONDON OLYMPICS THIS YEAR, PERMANENTLY – SOCIAL JUSTICE TAX CHANGES AHEAD

Five months ago, Nicolas Sarkozy told France’s people they had to “speak English more.” This is what French young people said to me when visiting New Zealand on their O.E. It was a prophesy perhaps, for youth and the wealthy elite of France. Even France’s fun youthful populations migrating because they were sick of moaning (or hearing it) were already beginning to embrace change.

No one favored Sarzkozy’s style of two-faced governance in a GFC they were exposed to. He was hurting France too much.

Francois Hollande, France’s new President elect plans to “implement a 75% tax rate on earning over a million euro. This in on top of a 45% rate for people making 150k euro or more.”

France’s wealthy are very afraid but at least Hollande has France’s majority behind his thinking. Hollande wants the rich to stop hiding behind the facade and to feel the squeeze that the people of their own culture are feeling in a GFC.

Of course, Britain’s David Cameron, fresh from his Rebecca Brooks hacking scandal friendship is aligning himself for the small yet significant French exodus that is expected to occur if Hollande’s thinking makes it into French policies.

With the UK officially back in recession, Cameron ”plans to cut the 50% tax rate for income above 150k euro by 5% to 45%.” That might cover the relocation costs for France’s wealthy. Read the rest of this page »

RYAN SEACREST BUYS ELLEN DEGERENES $49 MILLION BEVERLY HILLS ESTATE

There’s money in reality television in the USA. In 2012 the average American watched 4.5 hours of TV programming a day. That’s something most New Zealanders could not fathom. However in the US, TV is culture onscreen for Americans. There is very little foreign programming offered in the USA.

Hosting Fox’s American Idol reality talent show and producing the Keeping Up With The Kardashians reality shows on E! Entertainment channel too has meant that Ryan Seacrest is now able to purchase Ellen DeGeneres‘ $49 million Hollywood property. Hollywood Reporter & TMZ have the outrageous scoop. Ellen did more than okay out of it, originally purchasing the property for $29 million.

Seacrest’s pad purchase is all paid for from the fact that some Americans like Ryan’s brand of TV entertainment in their 32 hours average of TV viewing each week.

LOCK BRODIE RETALLICK IS ON HIS WAY TO BECOMING A RUGBY ALL BLACKS FOOTBALL STAR

Well-liked by past and present players of the New Zealand All Blacks Rugby Football side is the youngster Brodie Retallick, 20. The Canterbury schooled lock is described as being big, hard, in form and currently stars in the lock position for The Chiefs of Waikato. Excitement surrounds Retallick’s selection into the 35 players in training to wear the nation’s rugby football jersey.

The Rotorua Daily Post takes a whakapapa approach in defining why Brodie is well-supported to be in the family of All Blacks football stars this year. Notes sports journalist Greg Taipa:

“If you scratch the surface, you’ll find there is All Black pedigree running through the veins of the Retallick boys. Former Canterbury and All Black prop John Ashworth is the boys’ uncle.

Scratch a little deeper and you find Brodie’s older brother, Brook, is the Canterbury town first-five this season. His other cousins Matt and Jason Newton play for North Canterbury and Canterbury Country. Then there is his cousin Culum Retallick, the 27-year-old lock who spent two years with the Chiefs before moving to the Highlanders.”

Quite an outstanding sporting family.

Congratulations on selection!

DIRTY LAUNDRY AND WAXY IMPERSONATIONS – WELLINGTON MINISTERS HIGH LIFE & THE QUEENS KNICKERS ARE ON E-BAY VIA CHILE

I swear that New Zealand’s newspaper has gone a bit potty all of a sudden.

On page one and two of the nation’s main paper (circulation of 170,000) yet many more read it online, we have politicians airing their dirty laundry literally and hotel bills abroad too. The story is called Minister’s high life.

The alleged ‘big spending’ culprits are listed as being Foreign Minister Murray McCully. Trade Minister Tim Groser and Associate Finance Minister Jonathan Coleman. It’s hard to believe these are the same guys whose government is trying to hock off the state owned energy assets to rich ‘foreigners.’ Their bills don’t seem high enough.

More modest ministers-spend is listed as being: Minister of Maori Affairs, Pita Sharples: - $72.50 for ‘planning meeting’ for staff at Juniper Restaurant in Wellington and $100 – gift from Kura Gallery as farewell gift for staff: $100. And: Lady Gardiner aka Hekia Parata - Minister of Education, – Staff farewell dinner for 13 at Dragon Restaurant: $195.

AQUACULTURE, WATERWAYS HEALTH & DAIRY FARMING – FISH, CASH COWS & HALLUCINATING KAIPARA MAYORS

Farming is such a diverse field in New Zealand. Since 2009, the world’s population needs hitting 7 billion has meant that New Zealand’s ability to farm in various ways and produce high protein foods is the no.1 gift New Zealand can give the world in the years ahead. Farmers of all kinds, therefore in New Zealand, are stars of global populations of people. Kiwi farmers have what the world needs.

In NZ, we’re obsessed with black and white cows here as they pay the country’s bills, while everyone else sorta pretends to – pretty much – with the best they can strum up with business endeavors in this very stringent and tad boring economy – of them blasted GFC years.

Anyway, worries about the waterways farmers are damaging running extra cows (to bolster against the $3billion dip this year of dairy prices) while chasing the buck are causing concern. More farmers are converting their sheep farms to dairy farms and The Greens have their hemp knickers in a bunch as to how this is affecting streams, lakes and rivers etc and adding to green house gases on the planet too.

Cows (and farmers) can be very harsh on the waterways of New Zealand. Often they don’t fix up the mess – it’s a longstanding issue with a rather entitled land ownership position that many landowners have taken in New Zealand for quite some time. Everyone is farmer proud here, yet there’s a balancing act farners have still yet to find, while producing sloshes of liquid cash, the country needs.

Perhaps it’s time to develop aquaculture farming a bit more.

If that interests you, here’s a useful link: Sustainable Farming Fund – New round includes aquaculture – to find out more.

And what will Kaipara dairy farmers do, when their clown mayor (I’m sorry but Kaipara does have a clown mayor who wants to clear his entire county of existing residence who voted him in) has proposed a 33% rates hike up to pay for council debt? Some farmers even claim their rates could go up 55%. Does that mean that’s a recipe for being forced to even run more cows on the same whenua (land) just to give more to the council? Or does Kaipapara’s mayor need his pharmaceutical prescription record disclosed to the public, instead?

So how can aquaculture help farmer types be more aware of the earth’s gift of water and to be kinder to the landscape to make New Zealand more sustainable?  Are New Zealanders happy how the landscape is being re-engineered under current economic engineering as to ‘the best way forward’ that farmers are being encouraged to pursue, at this time?  Is the GFC (and effects too of it on dairy product prices globally) being used as an act of ‘economic bullying’ on farmers or New Zealand landscapes and waterways too? And what do the local Maori Iwi think of all this occurring within their tribal rohe (areas) as well?

In trivia news, Northland farmers are being encouraged to sell yearlings for shipment to China at $1,750 a head in the local paper.

TE ARAWA MAORI CULTURE ON DISPLAY IN LONDON

Recently Maori cultural performers of the Te Arawa Iwi (Maori tribe of Rotorua) were invited to perform in London at a certain royal performance, leading into the London Olympic Games.

Weirdly, I can’t seem to find a photo of these Kiwi stars representing the country on a global stage – in New Zealand’s print media. Can you? That one must of slipped on past, or flown over the cuckoo’s nest of the New Zealand print-media’s attention. There must be far more important news items on the radar at this minute instead.

If you can find a picture of Te Arawa performers live at a royal shing-ding recently, leave a comment on the blog with a link. Thanks.

DEVELOPING DUNEDIN SOUTHERN SCOTTISH WHISKY IN INDIA

I once flatted in Christchurch City with a girl called Alison. Descended from original Scottish settlers in Dunedin, Alison had a flaming ginge mane. Ali was no supermodel in appearances. She had a body like Booker prize winner Keri Hulme, and was beautiful on the inside. She is also super smart, a scientist at Lincoln University who was developing science to grow truffles in new ways for medicinal and culinary purposes.

Ms Dundein loved throwing the meanest dinner parties created from dishes she all cooked from scratch herself. Once Alison gave me one thimble-full of her family’s homemade brew, Scotch whisky recipe at one of her Christchurch dinner parties. I swear, no one moved in their chairs for half an hour and Alison (who remained unchanged) continued on with her truffle growing tales of what goes on beneath the surface.

That was almost seven years ago, when the house by the Avon river we lived in was once standing. The memory of Alison’s creativity and her understated way she served it up homemade from Dunedin family culture got me thinking about India today and its lucrative whisky market.

The British Business Finder notes:

“Few of the customers who scramble to be served at Vijay Sharma‘s humble off-licence would describe themselves as whisky connoisseurs. Not for them the likes of Johnny Walker or other Scotches long associated with the Indian elite.”

Andrew Buncombe continues the story in The Independant noting that, “off-licences such as the one managed by Sharma are the centre of a “whisky war” that is gripping India.

Figures collated by the London-based International Wine & Spirit Research (IWSR) suggest that, for the first time in seven years, Bagpiper whisky has lost its title as the world’s best-selling whisky to a recent upstart, Officer’s Choice. While Bagpiper sold 16 million cases in 2011, sales of Officer’s Choice reached 16.5 million. Read the rest of this page »

SAM CANE IS SELECTED FOR THE ALL BLACKS RUGBY FOOTBALL TRAINING SQUAD 2012

Down here in New Zealand, land of the current Rugby Football World Cup Champions, new talent is bursting through in 2012.

Young Sam Cane, 20, has been selected to join the forward pack as an understudy of All Black skipper, Richie McCaw in the captain’s star flanker position. Cane joins the newly expanded All Blacks training squad of 35. After several training camps, the squad will be reduced to 30.

All Black assistant coach Steve Hansen says of Sam learning from McCaw: “I think he could be something special. He’s robust, great over the ball and plays an intelligent game. He is a fetcher and he defends well. We do need an understudy.”

Cane’s favorite actor is Hollywood’s Denzel Washington. The player he most respects is Bay of Plenty team bud, Tanerau Latimer. His rugby football hero is Brad Thorn. Born in Rotorua, at 1.89m tall and weighing in at 104kgs, Cane’s biggest influence on his career so far has been his dad.

Appreciating comedy films, Sam’s favorite movie is Step Brothers. Big on guitar, his favorite muzos are Dire Straits. And he lists his book pick as Miracle in the Andes.

Getting selected into the All Blacks training squad is like getting an Oscar nomination of the rugby football world. So, good stuff!

Rugby selections are always bitter-sweet at top level sport. Cane lands the spot over his team mate Tanerau Latimer this time round. Will young Sam deliver in the future? Everyone in NZ, knows that he can! Go kid!

POLITICAL REPORTERS GUYON ESPINER & DUNCAN GARNER ARE “TEAM GUNC”

New Zealand news has gone a bit nuts today. Pharmaceutical drugs spend has been given a boost in the latest health budget was the big story – perhaps predicting rocky-er times ahead.

In TV3 political editor news, Rachel Glucina of The Diary reports:

“The powerhouse pair of political journalists Guyon Espiner and Duncan Garner, affectionately known as GUNC, are getting into bed for a live Budget special on May 24, whhere they will strip down the economy and measure the Minister of Finance’s performance.

It’s no secret the two have a long friendship – Espiner trusted Garner to be a groomsman at his wedding.

Garner said trust goes a long way. “With him sitting beside me [during the Budget] he can’t scoop me. I’ll know where he is at all times.”

Both boys are ready for action. “When we were rivals, people used to accuse us of colluding. Now we’re working together it’s getting quite competitive,” Espiner told The Diary.

At least Garner won’t have a problem remembering his pal’s name. “I’ll try not to refer to him like our mate Paul Holmes did on a few occasions, as ‘Political Espiner, Guyon Editor’.”

Could this super pairing be permanent? Insiders suggest more tandem shows could be in the peopleline for these two sharp minds.

It will depend, of course, on how well they perform next week. “It’s free-to-air so you get two political editors for the price of none,” Espiner said. And a bromance for free.”"

There you have it.

THE WORLD ON THE OBAMA YEARS – CRITIQUING THE ASSOCIATED PRESS’ “REPORT CARD” MAY 2012

One of the highlights of living in the USA was watching the turning point of America at the last election where Dick Cheney was positioned as being ‘wheeled off with a back strain injury’ from Washington DC to reduce anger from the American public concerning him. At the time, the moment was very sobering as George W Bush‘s wife said that a man’s best friend in Washington DC was The White House pooch. Sad movie all Americans watched. At least Mrs Bush Jr. was honest.

The excitement was when Obama got elected. America wanted change. I have never witnessed quite a moment like it. The moment bonded everyone within America at the time to the USA in a very real way that can never be forgotten. It was a ‘world-consciousness’ moment, everyone in the world registered with in various ways. We all acknoweldged, the world was changing. This was the Obamas’ first gift as people, selected to do a job.

When the Presidency was won, the neighborhoods of California literally erupted in hollars of joy. The sound was so surreal, like something you’d witness once in a lifetime. A chorus of jubilation. Relief was in the air. But not for long.

Unfortunately, The Obamas inherited a system that wouldn’t budge or yield much to their reign. An ingrained stubborness of entitlement, that no longer matched the energy consumption levels that the planet could sustain. None of us knew that at the time, or that our consciousness of that one main issue was about to be challenged out of necessity, big time.

The GOP increased in power half-way through Obamas term in office, making his government hamstrung in a very public way – that all the world watched and became aware that cronyism of Bush’s government was still ruling the halls of power. It was sad. Greed came to the fore. The disappointment many feel today, actually happened in this one moment of politics.

Yet it took the pressure off the new President, Read the rest of this page »

ROCKING 3D CUSTOM GUITARS, NEW ZEALAND LEADS THE WAY – OLAF DIEGEL’S INNOVATION

Olaf Diegel in New Zealand is making custom guitars rock.

The Sunday Star Times’ Neil Reid notes: Olaf Diegel, a leading academic has described the process involved in producing his state-of-the-art guitars as “the next industrial revolution”. Diegel is a professor based at Massey University’s School of Engineering and Advanced Technology in Auckland City and he has produced a series of prototypes of 3D-printed electric guitars.

Also known as additive manufacturing, 3D printing is the process of making three-dimensional solid objects from a digital file using a printer that deposits layers of plastic or metal powder, with each layer fused by a precision laser beam.

“The whole purpose is customisation and trying to avoid waste,” Diegelmade said.

“It’s the next big thing in manufacturing, because you can create to order and modify the design to suit specific individual requirements, whether it’s for a new set of teeth, a door handle or a piece of jewellery.

“It’s the next industrial revolution and it’s going to completely change the way we do things.

“New Zealand, a country largely made up of small companies making high-value products, can benefit enormously from these technologies, as they will be able to go to market with products without the current prohibitive tooling costs that often prevent them from getting their ideas off the ground.”

The guitar’s manufacturing process is already used for high-end customised products and medical parts such as artificial hips, hearing aids and dental fittings. Diegelmade’s faculty has several desktop 3D printers, which students use for small-scale engineering prototype projects.

After completing a series of 3D guitar prototypes, Diegel has now started manufacturing them commercially.

More here. How cool is Olaf for rockers at The Staples Center’s big rock concerts?! or big kids in their garages dreaming of being a rocker? Way cool!

MORE KIWIS CHECK OUT AUSTRALIA TO BRIGHTEN THEIR PERSONAL FINANCIAL FORTUNES

Front page of the national news today was: “Thousands of New Zealanders – including many disillusioned immigrants – are looking for new jobs and new lives in Australia.

The number of New Zealanders moving across the Tasman hit a record 53,000 in the year to February, but the unemployment rate at home and Australia’s new tax breaks that would make millions better off are tipped to lift that number.”

Australia’s mining boom has shine on it for many who are looking to get onto the home ownership board for the first time in their lives. At current house prices in New Zealand and what’s paying over the scarcity of jobs available, I can easily see the appeal in Oz.

Most Australian employees want Kiwi workers because Kiwis have a good reputation in Australia at working well, productively with natural initiative on the job… and brains that are forthcoming.

This has caused many in New Zealand to bemoan the fact that Australia uses New Zealand as a pool to fish the best talent from. Or Australia’s to moan the fact that Kiwis are their best mates and also get higher pay then them, before too long. Oh well…
